Well it looks as though us runners (well, wannabe runners at least) are in for a treat soon! Screenshots from a pretty authentic looking Nike+ iPhone app have surfaced on iPhon.fr. From the looks of things most of the core Nike+ website functionality is supported, as well as GPS route tracking, plus lots of snazzy stats and graphs.

From the screenshots it looks as though this app will also take care of music playback, which makes sense given Apple’s policy on background applications:

What’s unclear is how the iPhone will track your run, but three options seem feasible:

a) Use a sensor: Like the current solution for the iPod nano, Nike could require a special sensor (possibly bluetooth) that goes into your shoe. This seems unlikely though…

b) Use the built-in accelerometer: Seeing as how it works much like the current shoe-sensor, this seems fairly likely (See my original Nike+ for iPhone post for more information).

c) Use GPS: There are already several AppStore utilities that attempt to measure your car’s speed via GPS, however I think it would probably not be accurate enough for runners. Plus first-generation iPhone users would be left out of the fun, which isn’t unimaginable, but would be disappointing (and yes, I have the original iPhone). Obviously route tracking via cell-tower location pinpointing is a lot less accurate, but most original iPhone users would probably be willing to miss out on that functionality as long as the rest works.

Either way I look forward to seeing this in the App Store soon!

I’ve recently taken up jogging and the iPhone has been a great tool in helping me to motivate myself to get out the door. I use the stopwatch to keep track of my running times and of course the iPod app to play music and podcasts to keep myself occupied.

After carrying the iPhone in its Artwizz Seejacket case for a few days (which honestly wasn’t that bad), I decided to purchase the Belkin Sport Armband. Here’s some impressions after using it for a few days.

The iPhone is strapped very securely to your arm. I was worried it might dangle or wobble a bit, but it’s rock solid and very comfortable whilst running. Both sides of the velcro strip are fairly long, so there’s also no danger of it coming loose.

The key pocket is so tiny, it’s almost useless for anything except gym locker keys. But I stuff the excess headphone cord that gets in my where inside, so it has its uses.

There are symbols on the side to indicate where the volume controls are, which is a nice touch.

The touchscreen is still very useable, despite the clear plastic window that covers it.

There’s an opening at the top of the case, so if you plan on going jogging in the rain, I’d stuffing something up there to keep your iPhone dry.

Overall I think it’s a great case that’s well worth the purchase if you feel like taking your iPhone jogging with you.

Verdict: Recommended.

Note: It looks as though Belkin have introduced a slightly updated version that has a larger key pocket and is also compatible with the iPod touch. So be sure to take a look at both if you’re looking for a running case.
